Numbness

Numbness is not normal. Let’s find out why you are experiencing it…

Chiropractic for Numbness

Experiencing numbness and tingling in the hands or feet can be a really scary thing. Especially waking up first thing in the morning with numbness and/or tingling can start to get the mind racing. Could it be neuropathy? Could it be carpal tunnel syndrome? Could it be compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots? Could it be thoracic outlet syndrome?

All of these things can contribute to numbness and tingling in the extremities (arms, legs, hands, and feet), but the key is being able to determine what is the exact or primary cause.

We take a systematic approach to determining the root cause of your numbness. As a structural chiropractor, we begin by looking at the spine because that is where all of the nerves originate from. Then we work distally (outward) from there and check all of the major compression sites to determine where the problem is originating from.

If all of those sites are clear, it could be due to a multitude of other factors that would need to be checked, one by one.

The main thing is to not ignore the problem and hope it will go away. Numbness and tingling are not normal processes in a healthy body. These are signals that something is wrong and must be addressed.

Both my palms and fingers were swollen and numb. My right shoulder muscles were stiff and hard and I experienced on and off excruciating pain coming from two spots on my right arm. On top of that, I had extreme pain on my right back side causing me to limp on every step. I had difficulty squatting, climbing up and down the stairs, getting in and out of my car, riding bicycles, walking long distances, playing badminton, running, and swimming. I was unable to sleep well. I went to see doctors, Chinese physicians, and acupuncturists, but all of these brought temporary relief.

After 22 treatments by the capable, skillful, and professional Dr Matthew, all my aches and pains have progressively disappeared. All of my subluxation problems described above have been corrected by the expert help of Dr Matthew. Through chiropractic, I am now able to do all of the above activities with very minimal or no pain and difficulty at all. My sincere thanks to Dr Matthew for making me whole again, to live a richer and more meaningful retirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I getting numbness in my hands? Is it carpal tunnel syndrome?

Possibly. The easiest diagnosis is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but it might be coming from your neck, your shoulder, your elbow, or unchecked diabetes that led to neuropathy. If the numbness is due to compression of the nerve at the site of the wrist, it is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. If it is at the shoulder, it is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. If it is at the neck, it could be due to a structural shift, or herniated disc in the neck. Numbness in the hands is not normal.

Why does it feel better when I move or massage the area?

You might be getting temporary relief when you move or massage the area because you are moving blood around the area and stimulating the nerve receptors. This stimulation provides enough input to reduce or even relieve the numbness for a short period of time, you have to find the site of the problem and then correct the cause if you want lasting relief.

Is numbness normal?

Numbness is not normal. Whether it be due to nerve compression, neuropathy, or even an electrolyte or nutritional deficiency, it is a sign there is a problem in the body that has to be addressed. A symptom in the body is no different than a smoke detector in a house. It is there to let you know when there is a bigger problem going on that has to be addressed.

How can I correct my numbness?

It really depends on why you are experiencing numbness in the first place. Every situation is unique and needs a customized solution based on the individual and the site and severity of the problem. Be aware of any doctor or practitioner that promises you big results or makes general recommendations but has not taken the time to get to know your unique situation.
