Disc Herniation

An all natural solution to disc injury (or bulges and herniations)

Chiropractic for Disc Herniations

Do you have extreme neck or low back pain? Do you have pain/numbness that travels down your arms or your legs? Do you have numbness or pain in your hands or feet? If so, you may have a slipped disc.

Many people suffer needlessly for years with a slipped disc. To understand how we can help you, it is important to understand what a slipped disc is. A slipped, bulging, or herniated disc are all commonly used words for a similar condition.

You see, your spine was constructed with bones called vertebrae which are separated by discs. These discs act as spacers to separate the bones and create space for the nerve to exit from the spinal canal. If one of these discs becomes damaged, the material on the inside of the disc can protrude and create pressure on the nerves. This in turn leads to pain, numbness, and other symptoms in the area of injury as well as down the arms or the legs.

It started with mold at work and I was sick for years. It eventually turned into asthma and required lots of doctors and drugs. We abandoned the building and moved to a clean location, the asthma finally subsided, and I got off all of the medications.

I got out of bed one morning feeling pretty good but then my neck, shoulders began to get very stiff, and my right shoulder and hand hurt. It progressed to burning and tingling at times. Eventually, it got to the point where I could not even use my right and hand for ANYTHING. It was almost as if my right arm was paralyzed yet was extremely painful as well. It became so bad I had to train myself to become left-handed.

My medical doctor ordered an MRI, which I tried to do twice, but couldn’t even do because it was impossible for me to lower my head because the pain was so bad. I was then referred to an orthopedic surgeon who sent me to physical therapy, which got me no results, and then I was approved for a stand-up MRI.

My diagnosis was herniated discs in my neck and back. I was then sent to an orthopedic pain specialist who administered 3 epidurals in my spine and 6 injections in my back and shoulder. Four months later and there was still relief. I was referred to a neurologist and received a nerve conduction test. The doctor said it was possibly Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and I was given Lyrica for the tingling in my fingers. It helped a little bit but I was still in significant pain. I was referred back to the pain specialist and he wanted me to go back to the orthopedic surgeon to get carpal Tunnel surgery.

I was uneasy about having surgery so I went back to my primary physician who told me to try chiropractic care. Soon after, I met Dr. Westheimer at a health fair. Two weeks into treatment the pain started to subside. I stopped taking my medication one month into treatment I was living pain FREE and had full use of my arm again. I could also look up for the for the first time in over a year. My life has been completely transformed.

P.S. five weeks ago I could not have written this letter with my right hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a disc herniation?

A disc herniation is a condition where the nucleus pulposus (inside jelly-like substance of the disc) protrudes out through the annulus fibrosis (outer protective layer of the disc). Think of the disc like a jelly donut. When the jelly comes out, it can compress a nerve and cause tremendous pain and discomfort.

How does a disc herniation occur?

It occurs over time. Many people, including many doctors, believe it is a one-time event that causes a disc herniation because the story is usually the same. You bent down to tie your shoe, pick up weights, or turned the wrong way and felt a pop or were hit with immediate pain. While the pain inducing event might have been the recent movement, it is a process that occurs slowly over time.

Why did such a small movement cause so much pain?

Like I said above, the degenerative process that leads to a disc herniation occurs slowly over time. You have many layers of cartilage protecting the inside of the disc and keeping it contained. If you have abnormal structural alignment and movement patterns, those layers slowly wear out or get torn. If you tear enough of the protective layers, then you might have a seemingly small event that leads to a disc herniation, but it has been building up over time. Imagine if you had a car attached to a rope hanging above the ground. If you started to cut some of the strands of the rope, nothing would happen until you cut one small strand that finally caused the rope to break and the car to fall to the ground.

Do I need surgery for my disc herniation?

In many cases you do NOT need surgery. There are some severe situations where surgery is warranted, but many times we can correct the structure of the spine, restore proper biomechanics, and create a negative pressure in the disc (a good thing!) and help people avoid surgery and get their life back. We personally have helped hundreds of patients with disc herniations regain their health and quality of life over the years without having to resort to medications or surgery.
