Auto Accident Care

Getting back to normal after an accident is challenging but structural chiropractic can help you optimize your recovery

Car accidents can be a traumatic experience even if you don’t feel any symptoms right away.

Most of the time after a car accident, you will have symptoms associated with whiplash. Whiplash is a forceful, rapid back and forth movement of the neck that can cause pain and damage to the surrounding tissues. If it’s severe enough it can cause instability in the spine due to tearing of the ligaments that support the structure of the spine. If these are left untreated, it may lead to accelerated degeneration and early signs of arthritis.

Other situations where an accident occurs might not result in immediate pain, but will result in delayed onset of symptoms from days to weeks or even months. In these cases, the care that is needed might be unnecessarily delayed because there were no immediate symptoms.

If you have been in an accident, whether you believe your injuries to be minor or severe, it is best to get a thorough evaluation by a structural chiropractic who understands these injuries very well.

Give us a call if you’ve been in an accident and we would be happy to answer any questions you might have and provide you with the support you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I get checked by a structural chiropractor following an auto accident?

An auto accident can be a very traumatic event – physically and emotionally. The physical trauma from an auto accident creates a large stress to the spine resulting in discomfort and pain. There might be soft tissue injury as well as an abnormal shift that occurs in the spine as a result of the impact. The sooner the problem is addressed, the faster and more fully you will be able to recover.

What is whiplash?

A whiplash is a forceful back and forth motion of the neck, like cracking the whip of a rope. The forceful back and forth motion can create pain immediately if the trauma is severe or it could take hours or even a few days for the pain to set in. To prevent permanent damage and scar tissue from occurring, it is important to get the problem addressed and corrected as soon as possible.

What if I leave the problem alone after an auto accident?

Unfortunately, this is a route taken by too many people after an auto accident. If you have suffered an injury like a whiplash, even if it appears to be minor, it will build up over time and get worse. Scar tissue gets put down by the body, the muscles in the area atrophy, and the whole area gets weaker. This process also speeds up the degenerative process. It is best to get it evaluated and corrected as early as possible.

My doctor gave me muscle relaxers which seem to help. Isn’t that enough?

The muscle guarding is happening for a reason. While the muscle relaxers can be very helpful in temporarily reducing the pain associated with the muscle guarding, we have to be diligent to ask why the muscle is guarding in the first place. If that muscle guarding is serving a purpose and we artificially relax it, could it lead to more instability and problems down the road? The most important approach is to get to the cause of the dysfunction and correct that in order to create a long-term solution to the problem.
